I sold all my canvas packs. People really still go for the traditional styles. I am happy to think they will be out on the trail again, and for many years to come. I have come to depend on the durability, light weight and smart design of Dan Cooke’s packs.

Off soon for a ten-day class in Santa Barbara. It is the NOLS Wilderness First Responders Certification which I need to meet a stipulation of the National Park Service to guide on the Rio Grande. Don’t feel too sorry for me. There are worse places to spend ten days in December.

If you know how to operate a sewing machine. Here is a great gift idea for the canoe camper on your list. Little overcoats for pots and pans. If like me, cooking over a real fire is part of your wilderness camping experience, these little coats will save everything around them from getting black. They are one of my favorite pieces of gear. If you are not so hot with a sewing machine contact my daughter Zoe. For a price, she will fix you up. zoe kesselring <kess0118@umn.edu>
