In the thick of the Merlyn Project

IMG_0257-300x225After ten days north of sixty I have completed over 30 hours of recorded interviews and maybe more important I reestablished a solid “feel” for the North. Up here in December, if you blink, the short day is over and your eyelids have frozen together. Jean Carter put me up, fed me fish almost every day and was a fantastic host. I just focused on the book. The only bad thing about that is I have not been promulgating my Rio Grande river trips very well, all 3 of them still have openings. Please help me spread the word. I am going regardless of how many paddlers we have but i would like the IMG_0276-300x225groups to fill. It’s a great run through the lower canyons in balmy February weather. Now I am seeking out some key people and family members that knew Merlyn, but have retired to British Columbia. Another week on the road before I head back to Minnesota. Attached are a few photos of me commercial fishing on Great Slave Lake. Buffalo Joe McBryan famous for the TV show “Ice Pilots” told me last week that no one has hauled more fish by bush plane than Merlyn Carter, not by a long shot. I convinced Marius McCullum to take me out fishing on the big lake. You can interview all night and not learn as much as a day of doing. The neat thing is the technology of commercial fishing has not changed much in 60 years. In fact, the snow vehicle or “bug” we took out on the lake was built in 1952. So the experience was valuable for my research.  IMG_0232-300x225
